School Sports at Palmerston North.

The Foxton School was well represented at the annual sports gathering held in Palmerston N. under the auspices of the Manawatu Public Schools Amateur Athletic Association, which embraces in its membership nearly every school in the Manawatu district, and also the Pahiatua High School and the Wereroa Training School, the pupils of the latter school being recently transferred from Caversham, Dunedin. Special arrangements with the railway authorities being made, the affair resolved itself into a semi-excursion, large numbers of parents and scholars travelling to see the sports. The day was miserably bleak and did not conduce to the comfort of the large numlers of spectators and juvenile competitors. The various officials worked unceasingly to get the events off, this task being made harder owing to the late start, which was caused by waiting for the Cadet squads to arrive by train. The cadet competition and marching was worth going a long way to see, there being eight squads in the competition. The local boys, although not up to their best form, acquitted themselves well, gaining fifth place in the competition, the winners being the Training School Squad, which is a remarkably fine combination, possibly one of the best in N.Z. In the athletic events the Foxton competitors did well gaining six first prizes, four seconds and one third. The children had to leave the ground to catch the train and did not compete in the tug of war or drop kicking competitions in which they had good chances. Appended are the local winners and their contests.
