The Duke of Connaught studied the condition of Chinese labour, saw the accommodation, and is satisfied that the men are thoroughly well housed under the best sanitary conditions, and that the food is ample and excellent. The coolies are good workmen and well-behaved.

The Daily Chronicle’s Rome correspondent reports that Don Jaime and Don Carlos received an audience with the Pope, to whom they protested against King Alfonso’s alliance with a Princess of a Protestant house. The Pope replied that his assent was conditionally upon the bride’s spontaneous abjuration of Protestonism, which was a step in her private affairs and conscience. Beyond this the Vatican did not intend to intervene.
Paris, Feb 19. Lord Ashburton was married in Paris to Miss Frances Belmont, a member of Mr Charles Hawtrey’s theatrical company. New York, Feb 19. Moyer, President of the Western Federation of Miners, Heywood, the secretary, and Pettilione, an ex-member of the Executive Board, have been arrested at Denver as accessories to dynamiting and murdering Frank Steunberg. ex-Governor of Idaho. It is alleged the crime was committed in revenge for prosecutions by Mr Steunberg,.
