Concerning District Railways.
AN IMPORTANT MEETING AT PALMERSTON NORTH.
A conference of delegates from districts connected with Palmerston by the district railway system was held at Palme'ston on Tuesday, the President of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce, Mr J. A. Nash, presiding. The following gentlemen were present: Messrs J. T. M. Hornsby, M H R., and F. Fairbrother, (Carterton), Mr F. W. Franklaiid (Foxton), Messrs _ Tosswill and Mcßobie (Pahiatua), Messrs Williams and C. Ellison (Nanier), Mr J. T. Hogan, M.H,R. (Wanganui), Mr Lr. McKibben (Woodvilie), Mr W. T. Wood, M.H.R. (Palmerston) Mr M. Cohen (Mayor), and members of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce. Most delegates spoke as to the necessity of improved service m their own particular districts.
Mr Freeth moved (1) That in the opinion of the Conference it is essential to the better management of tbe railway system of the North Island, that the State should at once underfake the purchase of the property of the W. and M. Railway Co. (2) That the attention of the Railway Department be called to the continual overcrowding of mail trains and the lack of lavatory accommodation provided, and that it is a request to the General Manager of Railways that improved facilities in these respects be provided. (3) That in the opinion of this Conference inquiries into all radwav accidents involving the risk of human life be held in public, and that officials under suspension m connection therewith be, if they so desire, represented at such inquiries of the officials of one of their organisations.
(4), That the Railway Department be requested to so arrange Die Christmas and New Year services so that a connection mav be made between the Fast and West Coasts via Woodville. *
«). That the Railway Department be requested to expedite the 11 mixed train ’ ; services on the Dan nevirke-Palmerston-Wanganui sections.
The resolutions were carried, seriatim, unanimously. It was decided on Mr Freeth’s notion that the Government be asked to establish the tablet svstem on the Woodville-Nanier, Masterton-Woodvill, and TaihapeMarton sections.
It was proposed bv Mr T. A. Nash, seconded by Mr F. W. Frankland, that the service between Palmerston and Foxton V amended as follows :—That the nid-dav train should leave Pal* nerston for Foxlou on Wednesdays and Fridays ; that the train ’caving Palmerston on Saturdays at 8. <5 p.m. should be a fast pasagnyer train; all heavy Roods 'hould be forwarded bv the q a.m. '°alraerston train on Mondays; Wat the train reaching Palmerston at B.to a.m. on Monday should connect with the Danne•drke train leaving Palmerston at B,is a.m., that a lavatory carriaße be attached to the Foxton train. —Carried.
It was decided, on the motion ■\C MV Tosswill, seconded bv Mr Williams, that the speed of exon>ss trains between Nanier and WelHngton via Wairarana be inand that a dining" car be provided for the above trains a c mon as circumstances will permit. Carried. —Manawatu Standard.
