The Bookmaker Case.
Christchurch, Peb, 13.
Matthew Barnett and Peter Grant were indicted at the Supreme Court this morning,, before Mr Justice Dennistou, for that they did. on December 27th, 1905, being' occupiers of an office in. Hereford street, keep and use it for the purpose of betting with persons resorting thereto. The office was raided by the police on January Ist, and a large quantity of papers relating to betting transactions were seized. A plain-clothes constable also succeeded in making a bet with Barnett, though on other occasions he was refused by both accused. The defence was that it was perfectly legal for a man to carry on the business of bookmaker and make bets and record transactions provided be did not make bets with persons resorting to the office or give totalisator odds. The documents seized might all refer to transactions made by telephone, telegraph, or letter, and therefore legal. A verdict of not guilty was returned.
