Foxton School Committee.
Tiic Foxton School Committee meeting lasi evening was attended by Messrs S. H. Baker (chairman), Mrs FnmU.'amL Messrs Barnard, Betty, Coley, Gray, and Frankland (secretary.) Apologies of absence were received from Mrs Haywood and the Rev. Wilson. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The secretary reported that he had taken steps to carry out Committee’s instruction re the use of the old school for a High School; that the school excursion to Wanganui had resulted in a deficit of £4 ss, 3<*; . that the Minister of Education (Right Hon. R, J. Seddon) has signified his readiness to open the new school building. The head-master in his report urged the appointment of an additional pupil teacher in view of the removal of school to new building, pointing out, however, that we were not absolutely entitled to it on the score of average , attendance, as that would have to reach 250. Proposed by Mr Baker, seconded by Mr Frankland, That the secretary write Board, pointing out that architectural features of new building render appointment of an additional pupil teacher imperative. Carried.
Much discussion took place on the furniture of the new schoolhouse, and it was eventually resolved, on the motion of Mr Barnard, seconded by Mr Frankland, That the furniture question be left in secretary’s hands, after consultation between him and Mr Fraser,
The Premier’s visit to Foxton, for the school opening is likely to be jointly in connection with general affairs, and Mr Frankland proposed, and Mr Barnard seconded, That we advise Borough Council and the Chamber of Commerce that we are arranging for opening ceremonies, and that we invite their co-operation. —Carried. On the motion of Mr Gray, seconded by Mr Frankland, it was decided to purchase for the new school two maps recently offered r or sale to the residents of Foxton, nrovided the cost is not in excess ofias 6d.
The Rev. Wilson wrote offering two prizes for elocution —one each tor boys and girls—to be competed for at the breaking-up of tha
school at the end of the year. M? Wilson was heartily thanked for his donation.
The secretary was instructed to write to the headmaster at Levin and ascertain what steps had been ■ akeu to get his school converted into a district high school. On the suggestion of Mr Coley, it was decided to ascertain whether m excursion to Ashurst this sum* ner would be sufficiently acceptable to be likely to cover the guar-.rit-'e, and the head-master was accordingly requested to make the needful enquiries among the children.
Most of the accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting closed.
