Depine, Perfect of Police, brought a company of Republican Guards, Repine was dragged inside, but was rescued by a few of the foremost Guards. The doors were then dammed in their faces and the iron gates were shut, but the troops broke in, using the butts of their rifles. M. Rouvier, in the Chamber emphasised the Government’s moderation in taking inventories, in accordance with the terms of the law for the separation of Church and State, and said it was impossible to see the present resistance and disturbance, tile objects of Which were political. But the great body of Catholics must ■iot be confused with agitators. The law would be firmly upheld and enforced. A vote of confidence in the Government was carried by 384 to 186. The demonstrators, w r ho used sticks, were driven to a corner and sang a hymn. Several women were trampled upon and every window was smashed, the floor being strewn with missels. The inventory of the properties was then taken and one hundred and fifty arrests were made. Thirty demonstrators, policemen and guards were injured. Similar incidents have occurred in the provinces.
