Double Drowning Accident.

Nelson, January 29

A double drowning accident occurred in the Upper Matakiki on Friday evening. Two young men named Arthur Thornton and Joshua Scholefield thereby lost their lives. They had followed the funeral of the late Mr WilHan White as far as O’Rourke’s Hotel. The river was quite low on crossing, but when returning in the evening it was swollen greatly. Both were attempting to cross the river on one horse, and it is thought that in the semi-darkness they had not noticed the rise. Both were good swimmers. Scholefield’s body was found near Mr Fred Lister’s, about ten mile? trom the scene of the accident, and Thornton's body was discovered by Mr Morel, when returning from the Bellevue dredge, about three miles from Murchison. Thornton and Scholefield were half-brothers single, and aged about 26 and 27 years. - Thornton was generally known as Arthur Scholefield.
