THIRD MATCH IN WARES,

NEWPORT DEFEATED,

London, December 23

The New Zealand footballers defeated Newport at Newport by six points (a try obtained by E. T. Harper, of Canterbury, and a penalty goal kicked by W. J. Wallace, Wellington) to three points (a penalty goal.) About fifteen thousand spectators witnessed the match, which was played in dull weather, but on good ground. Newport started weakly. Harper soon outran the backs and scored a try, which Wallace failed to convert. The latter, however, shortly afterwards placed a goal from a penalty kick. The home team then improved in play and nearly scored. Even play ensued till half time was called with' New Zealand 6, Newport nil. The second spell produced a keen fight. Griffiths dropped a splendid penalty goal, and for the reminder of the spell the visitors were compelled to play defensive game. The whistle sounded with the score—New Zealand 6, Newport 3.

A WIN AGAINST CARDIFF. Mr Seddon received the following message from the High Commissioners New Zealand beat Cardiff by xo points (two goals) to 8(a goal and a try). Nicholson and Thompson got a try each. O’Sullivan broke his collar-bone in the middle of the first spell. London, Dec 26.

Forty-five thousand spectators were present at Cardiff, which was represented by a strong side including five internationals. In the second * spell Cardiff pressed strongly till they made a mistake and let Nicholson score. Wallace converting. The home team made great efforts to draw level but the Zealand defence was excellent. Just before time, however, Thomas got an opening and crossed, buf Winfield failed to add the coveted points. The match ended —New Zealand 10, Cardiff 8. VISIT TO FRANCE. BRITISH MATCH MAY LAPSE. Owing to the visit to France the match between the New Zealanders and Britain will probably fall through.
