THE YEAR’S AWARDS. . The awards of the Nobel Prizes for 1905 are announced. The following are selected as worthy of the honours: —
Humanity and Peace.—Baroness Suttner of Austria, the authoress of the novel “ Lay Down Your Arms.”
Physiology.—Dr Koch, of Germany, discoverer of the new treatment for tuberculosis.
Physics.—Professor Leonard, of Kiel, for his researches in connection with Cathode rays. Chemistry.—Professor Baeyer, Of,Munich, who discovered a means of producing artificial indigo. ... , Literature, —M. Henrik SienkieWicz, the Polish novelist, author Of “ Quo Vadis ?” and “With Fire and Sword.”
[The Nobel Prize was instituted by Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor of nitro-glycerine and dynamite. At his death at St. Remo in December, 1896, he left a fortune of over made from the manufacture of explosives. He desired that most of this money should be employed to provide annual prizes for those making the most important discoveries in physics, chemistry, physiology, writing the best literature and accomplishing the most for peace and humanity,]
