THE GENERAL ELECTION.
Ono? more the triennial political struggle is over, and the electors of the colony have plainly evidenced their confidence in Richard Seddon and his administration by returning to powera large majority of his political supporters. All along the line we’ are pleased to notice the drift of public in the tread of .Seddonism. At Dunedin, H. D. Bedford, who at last election polled the largest number of vptes ever- recorded in New Zealand (10,060), fell a victim yesterday to J. A. Millar, the Government nominee, while the present Mayor of Christchurch (Mr Gray) vanquised another Prohibitionist in the person of Mr T. E. Taylor. Further north, at Wellington, the great John Duthie was defeated by Charles Izard, the Government nominee. The Government have regained both the Wairarapa (Hornsby) and Manawatu (Stevens) seats, whilst perhaps the greatest loss the Opposition have suffered is the defeat of Capt. Russell for the Hawke’s Bay seat. The Pajmerston North constituents proved conclusively they want no more of the Pirani class of politician, for they returned W. T. Wood, the Government candidate, by a large majority. At Franklyn W. F.' Massey, the promising Opposition leader, easily defeated Mr McArdle, the Government candidate. Right through the colony, in fact, the Seddon Administration .has gained ground, and, while not in favour of any party having too large a majority, still, the will and voice of the people generally speakes satisfaction, and we trust the laws and general administration enacted by the present Parliament will prove as effective as they have done since the advent of the present Government.to the reigns of office. The complete returns show that the Government have 59 supporters returned, and the Opposition 13, which leaves a majority of 46 in favour of Government.
