There was fine weather for the test match between England and New Zealand, played at the Crystal Palace. The game was witnessed by an enormous crowd, estimated at quite 89,000, a record attendance for a Rugby match in England. All Rugby matches in London and many Association fixtures were postponed to enable the players to witness the match.
Recent rain had made the ground terribly heavy, and its condition told palpably on the player', inasmuch as towards the end of the game many of the contestants were fagged, THE TEAMS.
The greatest care had been taken in selecting a team to do battle for the Old Country, with the result that a fine team was got together. It included seven old international players. It included seven old international players. V. H. Cartwright captained the home team, and associated with him were Godfery and A. Hind (Leicester) and Shewring (Somerset). The English team played five three-quarters, with J. R, Raphael (Oxford) as “ rover.” The New Zealand team were as follows :—Fnll-baek, G. Gillett; threequarters, W. J. Wallace, R- G. Deans, D. McGregor; five-eights, J. Hunter and -I. W. Stead; half, F. Roberts; forwards, D. Gallaher, S. Casey, G. Tyler, F. Newton, J. O’Sullivan, F. Glasgow, A. Seeling, A. McDonald. Smith stood out on account of having injured a shoulder in the Limerick match.
In the first spell, McGregor scored three tries, Wallace failing to convert any. In the second spell, McDonald and McGregor scored one try each, but neither Wallace nor Gillett could convert, and the game ended—New Zealand 15, all England, nil-
