A LEAGUE OF PEACE.
Berlin, Nov. 23. General Booth, addressing 5000
people at Berlin, advocated a 1 eague of peace with two sovereigns as presidents and the governments churches and press to advocate it, presenting to the \Vorld an exemplification of the real fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man.
ANOTHER AUSTRALIAN SCANDAL.
Sydney, Nov. 24
The report of the Public Service Board with regard to the payment of retired civil servants by previous administrations, revealed a scandal. Referring to the report in the House, Mr Carruthers, the Premier, stated that a sum of j£sOoo had been voted, and instead of being distributed among 160 applicants it was distributed among 30. The report showed that not
one penny should have been voted and not one penny distributed. The was obtained largely or almost wholly by the influence of two ex-members of Parliament, Mr John Haynes and Mr E. M. Clark, Those who got the /5000 subscribed for a presentation to the members mentioned.
Mr John Norton interjected They got /600. AUSTRALIAN SETTLEMENT. London, Nov. 23.
Mr Cochrane states that the number of workless in Australia,
together with the complicated land
laws, will prevent settlement, while droughts make farming very hazardous. There are very many artisans unemployed owing to the crowded condition of the labour market. The Agents-General consider the statements misleading and they are already making emigrants, some with capital, afraid to venture to Australia.
