The Haining-street Murder.
TERRY ON HIS TRIAD.
Wellington, Nov. 22
Lionel Terry, who shot a Chinaman some weeks ago and gave himself up to the police, appeared at the Supreme Court yesterday morning charged with, the murder. When asked to plead he said “I have nothing to say except that my action was right and justifiable.” The Crown Justice said this amounted to a plea of not guilty."
The Crown Prosecutor said the jury wouid be relieved of any difficulty as to whether accused committed the act. It might be that the question of responsibility for the act would arise. Evidence was called to show that the aged Chinaman, Joe Yung, was shot through the head with a revolver while walking along Haining-street on Sunday night, September 24th, and that accused next day gave himself into custody. The prisoner conducted his own defence. He did not cross examine the first two European witnesses, but cross-examined the Chinese witnesses as to details of his appearance and as to their gambling.
SENTENCED TO DEATH, BUT RECOMMENDED FOR MERCY. Lionel Terry was found guilty with a strong recommendation to mercy, and was sentenced to death. He made a long plea in justification of his act.
