Sydney Wharf Labourers Dispute.

Sydney, Nov. 16,

Two thousand attended the mass meeting of whart labourers held to consider the recent award of the Arbitration Court in respect to payment for night work. Extraordinary precautions were taken to prevent the leakage of news, and no official information is obtainable, though it has been ascertained that a resolution was carried, but not unanimously. In some quarters it is stated that it is proposed that a general cessation of work take place on the coastal and interstate wharves when the arbitration award comes into operation on Monday. Others Say there is to be a cessation of night work only, and there are still others who say the resolution favoured the continuance of the existing rates. The general opinion is that there will be at least a partial cessation on Monday. THE POSITION AT NEWCASTLE. The Newcastle Shipping Company on Wednesday notified wharf hands that their pay would be 48s per week of sixty hours, and the overtime rate from Monday would be is 4d instead of is 6d per hour. The men at first demurred, but they intimated their intention of accepting the terms.
