Yesterday no wharf labourers put in an appearance on the North Coast Company’s wharf Inquiries by the Company elicited the reply from the union’s secretary that the men had no , contract with the company, and were not compelled to work, but no explanation of their withdrawal was forthcoming. The Company, with the assistance of its own staff and some oilrside labour, got its steamers away to time. The union officials are reticent, pending a mass meeting on Wednesday to consider the whole position. It is understood that the Shipowners’ Association has decided to uphold the Arbitration Court’s award respecting the payment of wharf labourers for night work, and will unitedly resist any attempt to override the award.
