Personal.
The Dunedin correspondent of the " Lyttelton Times ” states that Mr T. H. Hamer, popularly known on the secretarial staff of the Premier will succeed Mr Huntly Elliot (who is retiring on a pension) as undersecretary in the Mines Department. William Apperly, aged 24, was drowned in the Ruamahunga river (Masterton) on Sunday. Deceased was out fishing with two companions. The latter left him sitting on a bank and went lower down the stream. Judging by the time the deceased’s watch stopped the accident must have occurred a quarter of an hour after his m ites left him. The body had been in the water about three hours when it was recovered. Deceased was a strong swimmer, but it is surmised that he was seized by a fit, to which he was subject, and fell into the water in a state of insensibility. ■
