! MR STEVENS AT ©ROIJA BRIDGE. A correspondent writes : —Mr John' Stevens met a large number ot his supporters at Oroua Bridge bn Mon* day last, and formed a strong working committee, of which Mr O. Macaulay i was elected chairman, and Mr F. Williamson secretary. The candidate expressed his pleasure at the active ; interest displayed by the electors iB the locality. Some reference was i Jmade to the third candidate, Mr 0. i Gardner, and the general impression I arrived at was that any votes cast for ; him would be thrown away, as politic i c illv he is neither fish, flesh, fowl, or : red lierring. That' he has a right to offer hfmself as a candidate no one denies, but the Liberal electors are; pot so verdant as to believe that any; candidate who has no party or policy can advance their interests either in or out of Parliament, and this result of the contest must therefore lie between the Opposition and true Liberal gup-*' porters. It was determined to hold the- next committee meeting on the 19th. Mr Stevens also informed those present that he would shortly deliver his public political addresses, and would notify the dates by advertise; mi nt in papers circulating in the district. Votes ot thanks to the chairman j and secretary concluded the proceedings.
