Foxton Chamber of Commerce.

The meeting of the Council of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce called for yesterday at 7 p.m., was' attended by a bare quorum —Messrs G. A, Simpson (president), P. Hennessy, G. H. Stiles and R. Moore. The business was confined to the consideration of correspondence relating to wharf extension, the proposed Foxton-Levin mail service, extension of Sanatorium, and conservation of the river. Two new members, Messrs Geo. Coley and S. Hickson, were elected.

In addition to the members of council above mentioned, only four members (Messrs A. Speirs, A. W. Bradley, M. H. Walker and H. Austin) aitended the general meeting call oil for 8 p.m. As ten were required for a quorum, the president moved an adjournment till Monday 2nd October. He expressed the opinion that it was decidedly unfair on the part of those members who could not tdie the trouble to attend even the first general meeting to waste the time of the eight members who did attend by rendering the meeting useless by their absence. The speaker had himself attended the meeting at great iu•onvenienee, having come specially for toe purpose that evening from Waverley where he was superintend! g the erection of a flaxmill. It was hardly the thing where there were some men willing to give their time and take trouble for the welfare of the township and district that others, who were ready enough to declaim against the lethargy of the public, should themselves be the last to back up those who were willing to work, when it came to a question of taking a little trouble. After ho iugstra ued a point to be there to meet his eng gemmit he thought it very imgraciou:. to say the least, that only eight out 'of forty-two members could take the trouble 10 •urn up. The adjourned meeting will b ■ held on Monday next. 211 a Oeiobcr, at 8 pan., in the Masonic Hall, when it is hoped there will be a full attcudauce.
