Barnard, the local jeweller. At Randwick (Sydney) yesterday, Gladsome won the Craven Plate, Isolt the Wycombe Stakes, and Sungod the Grantham Stakes. The Foxton Racing Club have accepted the tender of J. Arnotb and Sons, of Palmerston North, for the erection of buildings on the Club’s course.

The wedding took place on Tuesday of Mr John Fox, of Foxton, to Mrs Clare Ellen Robinson of Palmerston North. The Rev. IT. F. Wilson conducted the cermony, which was solemnised in St, Peter’s Church, Terrace End. Word has been received that Miss Miriam Barnard has successfully passed the Trinity College Examination in theory with honours. Miss Barnard received her tuition at St. Francis Avier Academy, Wellington. We wish this young lady further; success.

Manila hemp, fair current grade, is £3B. The principal business at the meeting ol the Borough Council on Monday was a discussion on the matter of reducing the area of the borough. A report by the Town Clerk was adopted with a minor alteration, setting on! the proposed new boundaries, which will enclose about the same area as the old town board district. This will cut out all outside of No. 6 Line and Purcell and Union Streets, cutting out three-quarters of the present area. A stranger who was arrested in Melbourne, replied, “ Herbert H. The Inspector a report on the recent examination aml inspection of the Foxton State School has not yet been received, hut we understand that it vill be of a highly satisfactory nature. The results of the special examination for certificates in the Sixth standard hawreached us, and arc as follow: —Ceitificates of proficiency have been awarded, to Frank Levett, Stanley Wanklvu. Hilda Barber, Rose Hudson and Ivv Hughes; and of competency to Lio' el Bullard, Gordon Collims, Augustine Levett, and Florence Edwards. Captain George Armstrong passed away at Akaroa last week at the dvanced age of 85 years/ The deceased was one of the earliest traders to Warnganui, and he rescued Mr “Jock ” McGregor on the measion of that ge 1tleman’s famous dive. Mr McGregor, pursued by the Maoris, escaped by jumping from Shakespeare’s Cliff into the river. While swimming in tin; water he was the target for the bullets of the Maoris, and was for some time in jeopardy. Captain Armstrong’s schooner was lying in the river, and the captain, against the order of the militarv authorities, went to the rescue of McGregor, and succeeded in bringing him safe ashore. Armstrong, on returning, was arrested fw having disobeyed orders, but after being marched ujX almost to the Rutland Stockade, was released.
