TEN FATALITIES.
An express train front Cromer, in Norfolk, to London was wrecked at Witham Junction, neir Colchester, in Essex. •
Six women and four men were killed, and fifty persons injured. It is difficult to aceouat for the ac* cident. Examination of the metals reveals no fault. The train was approaching Witham at full spead when a carriage became derailed—it is he lieved owing to a fractured axle, or be* , cause a sham curve was being nego. tiated—and the train was thus suddenly parted. Four carriages of the rea r seetien of the train mounted the station platform —one turning a somersault—and' de* mohshed the porter’s room, killing the porter. The were heaped toge.the rby the terrific impact. ' There were many miraculous escapes including those of a party «f forty of Dr Barnardc’s children.
A gasometer burst, setting fire trail overturned carriage of the front sec* tion, but the sole occupant leaped eat safely before the carriage overturned.
