Wharf Extension.

RESOLUTION BY THE BOROUGH

COUNCIL

A meeting of the Borough Council, was held last evening to discuss the question of wharf extension. There were present the Mayor (B. G. Gower), Crs Gray, Moore, Franldand, Baker. Mr J. Vile, M.H.R., wrote asking that the ,council should pass a .resolution urging that something should be done to improve wharf accommodation at Foxton, and he would then submit this to the Minister. He thought something might perhaps be done. The Mayor moved: That this council urge upon the Government the immediate necessity of an addition of 200 ft, to the Foxton wharf in order to provide berthage for two more steamers, so as to prevent the delay now constantly occurring through vessels having to wait for berths, and that Mr Vile, M.H.R. for the district, be asked to convey this resolution to the Mlpisters for Railways and Marine.

Gr Franldand, who seconded the motion, thought the people of Palmerston and other boroughs, who ware equally interested, might be induced to assist.

fir Baker thought the urgency of improving the river should be pointed out. Mr Hennessy, who was present, said the Minister for Marine had refused to do anything for the river, while there had been something like a half-promise to do something in the way of adding to the wharf. The motion was carried. On the morion of Crs Moore and Frankland it was decided to ask the Palmerston North and Feilding Borough Councils and Chambers of Commerce to co-operate with the Foxton bodies in endeavouring to secure extended wharf facilities and river improvement, and assistance to the pilot.

At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, held subsequently, when there were present Messrs Alt. Fraser ( vice president, in the chair), P. Hennessy, R. Moore, F. W. Frankland, and C. L, Barnard, a similar resolution was carried, on the motion of the chairman seconded by Mr Frankland, urging the extension of the wharf 200 ft to the south. It was also decided to invite the cooperation of the Palmerston, Feilding, and Levin Chambers of Commerce.
