The death is announced of the Basuto chief Lerothodi.
Mr Alfred Waterhouse, R.A., a well-known English architect, is dead, aged 75 years. Mr J. Louisson, formerly of the Foxton Postal branch, is at present in town on holiday leave, Mr Geo. Nye, who has been laid aside by illness for several weeks, yesterday went to Palmerston North so as to be in closer touch wnth his medical adviser. News has been received at Christchurch of the death of Lieut. Garcia by drowning in the Scinde River India. Deceased served in South Africa with the Imperial Yeomanry and in the second New Zealand Contingent. He was a native of Christchurch and a keen athlete, having in 1897 held championship honours. Lord Minto succeeds Lord Curzon as Viceroy of India. Lord Ourzon’s ability is generally recognised and regret is expressed that his resignation should have become necessary.
Mr G. R. Bridge has been reelected chairman of the Wanganui Education Board. Owing to his innifterent state of health, however, his work has been lightened by appointing Mr Fred. Pirani to several nositions which otherwise would fall to the chairman
