MR OSWALD GARDNER’S CANDIDATURE.

Mr Oswald Gardner, who is coming out as an Independent Liberal for the Manawatu seat, states that, briefly, lie is in syrapathpy with the policy of the present Government, as indicated in past legislation. He styles himself “Independent,” however, because he considers no member should be tied down.to support what a party may do at any time. On the laud question, Mr Gardner states he is an “ out-and-out Freeholder,” but agrees that restriction in area is desirable. Labour legislation promoted by the Liberal Administration has his approval, and he considers the ultimate and true Liberal aim is to secure equality of opportunity for all, which would mean that good men would come to the top according to their deserts. Regarding the liquor question, he believes in nolicense as for the good of the country. On the subject of compensation he admits it would be desirable if practicable, but so far he has not heard of any satisfactory proposal for dealing with this phase of the question. Mr Gardner will shortly begin his campaign and place his views in detail before the electors.
