Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, AUGUST 5, 1905. MR. FRANKLAND’S RETIREMENT.
Somewhat unexpectedly, Mr. F. W. Fraukland, who had announced himself as an Independent Liberal candidate for the Mahawatu Seat, has retired from the contest. This step has been taken in the interests of the Liberal Party, and though Mr. Frankland’s many supporters will no doubt regret his withdrawal, they, and Oven political opponents, will view his action with admiration. The quality of self-abnegation is not so often displayed among would-be politicans, and an instance of this kind comes as a refreshing breeze through the political atmosphere. Mr. Frankland has not abandoned the idea of at some time securing a seat in Parliament, and in view of that he will circulate the address he recently gave in Foxton throughout the electorate ; but for the present he is content to do his best for his party by retiring and thus minimising the splitting-up of its supporters’ votes.
