\ would-be “ shoplifter ” had a pleasant experience, and also unexpected one, last ■ aturday evening. Passing by the shop of the local pork butcher, who also sells iish, he saw some smoked mackerel on a shelf. He went in accordingly and on pretence of buying some black pudding, he took advantage of the dealer’s back being turned to si p a mackerel into his pocket unperceivod by that person. He made some excuse about not purchasing tine black pudding and left the shop, no doubt congratulatinghimself on having secured a cheap evening meal. But Nemesis was on his track. His actions had been noted by an outside spectator who, after the thief had left, informed the dealer of what bad occurred. The latter promptly followed and caught up with the oflender, took the mackerel out of his pocket and on the latter turning half round to ascertain the cause he received a hearty smack with the fish on the right cheek. Surprised at the sudden attack he turned his other check and received another hearty slap. He started to argue that ho had purchased the fish, but on being informed that if be started on that tack it would mean, an interview wdfch the police, he drooped it and' took to lus heels. The dealer thinks it will be some time before he is favoured again with a visit from that person.
