Mr G. Denton, representing Gassed and Co., the well-known London publishing firm, is at present in town. The death is announced of Mrs J. G. Acland, widow of the late Hon. J. B. Acland, of Mount Peel, aged 75, eldest daughter of the late Bishop Harper. The death is announced, at the age of eighty-one years, of Dr Kevin Ixnd O’Doherty, the last of the “ Young Ireland ” party In July, 1848, he was arrested, tried on a charge of treason, and exiled to Tasmania. It is announced at Christchurch that several changes in the administration of the Salvation Army will take place in October. Colonel Gilmour goes home and Brigadier Cain (Christchurch) takes command of the whole of New Zealand till a successor to Gilmour is appointed. Included in the list of promotions in status gained this year by teachers under the Education Department we notice the names of Miss Wanklyn from E 4 to E 3, and Mr L. Fnrrie from D 4 to D 2, the grounds of promotion being length of service and marks for teaching ability given by the Chief Inspector.
