Lord Northcote has sent for Mr I Deakin, who is now engaged in forming a Ministry. IMPERIAL CONFERENCE^! London, July 4. On the motion of Mr Reeves, High Commissioner for New Zealand, seconded by Sir J obn Cockburn, the Council of the British Empire < League passed a resolution expressing the hope that the periodical Colonial Conferences would he accorded permanent existence, thus becoming a Council of Umpire. The motion suggests that India be represented at such conferences. CRICKET. London, July 4, In the third test match England opened the batting, and compiled 301 in the first innings. MINOR MATTERS. It is estimated that there are font thousand unemployed in Sydney. ■ Thirty million pounds’ worthrof tea was released from bond in London under the reduced duty. A boiler exploded at a sawmill at < Gundiah, Queensland. Fragments were scattered over a quarter of a mile and the exposition carried away a chimney stack, Soft high. Twenty men, who were working near the boiler, had a marvellous escape. Two men were seriously injured, and two boys slightly. In replying,to a deputation of Hand miners, who asked for protection against Chinese, Lord Selborne,, High Commissioner, said that the bad language the Chinese used against: the whites appeared to be the sole cause of the trouble. Although forty thousand Chinese were employed, said Lord Selborne, there had only been twenty cases of assault in one year. Fourteen of these cases had occurred in two mines, while in the remaining twentv-six mines employing Chines® labour there had been only six instances of assault. He urged the white miners <0 refrain from drink and the use of bad language, thus setting a good example.
