Foxton Literary and D bating Society
i'he ordinary meeting of the Society was held last night, Mr W. Harris fulfilling the duties of, chaitnlaii- There was a : good fitten'daifob of members. The minutes Bf the previous meeting weft read and confirmed, after which the Secretary reported on meetings of the committee and the result of the deputation to the Borough Council. The business of the evening, which was a debate on the question “Is modern literature decadent ? ” was then proceeded with. Messrs W. S. Stewart and W, Barnard led in the affirmative, and Rev. Wilson and Mr Jenksthe negative side. After some very able discussion on both sides, the question was put to the vote, resulting in a win for the affirmative side by a majority of one vote. Matters relating to thelectureto-mor-row night were arranged, and it was said that the tickets were _ selling satisfactorily. At this meeting two gentlemen were nominated as desirous of becoming members of the society. The meeting then adjourned with the usual vote ot thanks to the chair.
