Carnegie’s Millions.
NOT WANTED IN FOXTON. Some little stir was caused at the annual meeting of All Saints parishioners when a proposal was brought in that Mr Andrew Carnegie should be applied to for a grant towards the new organ fund. It was suggested that out of the amounts of coin being handed round, promiscuous-like, as Artomus (Ward would have observed, a stray couple of hundred might drop this way. All went well for a minute or two; the reverend shepherd moved that the application be made in due form; this was seconded by the local financial comptroller and looked in a fair way of being carried nem conivhen a blushing nervous looking young scribbler rose in his wrath (as much as his perturbation would allow him to exhibit) and denounced the proposal as “ di graceful ” and likely to bring everlisting shame on Foxton’s church which ought to he able to get an organ “on its own ”or go without. At this outburst of unexpected opposition, the the Carnegie-ites looked crestfallen, but the motion was put and there were six “ ayes ” and one “ no.” Then the mover thought it would be better to consult the ladies, and they were asked to vote also. Three of them sided with the motion and six rallied round the redoubtable left-winger, leaving the voting 9 to 7, whereat the mover decided to capitulate as the meeting was not unanimous. The anti-Carnegie section now rejoices that the reproach sometimes burled at West Coast and The Thames may not yet be burled at tbit sequestered nook.
