Five burglars blew up a bank at Gilbertville, New York, and stole £I2OO. They escaped on horseback, keeping their pursuers at bay with revolving. In reply to a petition by the Mayor of Foxton and others, praying that Messrs G. A. Simpson, F. W. Frankland, and P. J. Henne sy be appointed Commissioners of the Peace, word has been received that the matter will receive consideration from the Minister of Justice when further appointments are made.

We regret to have to record the death of J. W. Liddell, an old and esteemed resident of Foxton, which occurred on Sunday morning, through an internal complaint. Deceased had been suffering for some time pasf, and finally he was compelled to confine himself to his bed on Saturday last. We join with many others in extending our sympathy to the sorrowing re- ' lations. The funeral takes place to-day. Some indignation is manifested over the Customs authorities at Hobart re fusing to allow a blind passenger to land from the Ruapehu till the agents deposited £2OO. The' passenger is a well-known Glasgow manufacturer, who is touring the world, with his daughter. Mr Reid, the Federal Premier, is amazed at the incident. Ede says if it is true, then some person in the Customs Department is either a consummate ass or has been grievionsly misinformed as to the circumstances. Tha death occurred last evening, at the residence of Mr G. Coley, son-in-law, of Mrs Catherine Mary Murphy, after a long and suffering illness. Deceased had reached the ripe old age of 83 years, and her relations have the sympathy of many sorrowing friends in their bereavement. The funeral will leave Mr Geo. Coley’s residence tomorrow afternoon at 2.30 for the Avenue cemetery, where father De Lach will conduct the burial service.

It is high time the Police Department stepped in to prevent some of the blackguardism which the passengers by the Palmerston —Foxton Saturday night train are compelled to put up with. Last Saturday night was no exception to the rule, several hoodlums who were travelling along the routein a more or less drunken state—making use of language which would disgust even the beasts of the field, to say nothing of the lady passengers. A joke is a joke, but mannikins such as these deserve the fullest penalty of the law for so unnecessarily degrading manhood. If a private-clothes police officer were to be put on oc casionally on this particular train, he may get a few cases, which would serve as examples, and thus stamp out niggardly behaviour which is even beyond the bounds of indecency; and, by so doing, a great favour would be bestowed not onlv upon the general public, hut upon the railway officials, who are unable to cope with the difficulty. May we never again have to record such language within our hearing as we were compelled to listen to by a half-drunken gang of undesirables, who left the train at a by.stgtjon last 1 Saturday waißg.

The Council Public Works Committee were busy inspecting the drains of the Borough this morning, being driven oyer the route by Cr Gray.

A fata! case of phgue has occurred at Lismore (about 520 miles north Irom Sydney). Two cases are reported at New Castle, one of which proved fatal.
