Football.

By “ True Sport.” An important practise will be held at the racecourse to-morrow afternoon, and it behoves all footballers to roll up and get into form. The Hankins' Shield contests started in the Northern Division on Saturday last, when Palmerston beat Old Boys by a penalty kick—three points to n>l, and Kia Toa beat Iwiroa by 12 points to nil. At Feilding, Institute were defeated by the borne team by 6 to 3. Manawatu have put in their claim for (he Ranfurly Shield, by challenging Wellington for the honour. With the help of one or two Foxtou players, it is quite on the cards the Shield will be brought to Palmerston. Manawatu will beat the best of them this year, and even Taranaki may have to play second fiddle to our doughty sons. We have exceptionally good material to choose from, and the Manawatu Union selectors are mea who can be relied on to place the team right. A quiet tip to sports who prefer to gamble on the result of toe-ball matches: “ Rush the betting market early and get the odds, for ’ere the season is far advanced, Manawatu will be red-hot favourites in all interprovincial contests.” And they will win too !

The Simpson Cup competitions start on the localTtacecoursa next Saturday afternoon, when an exciting tussle is likely to eventuate between Old Boys and Huia. Both teams boast ot having good players in their ranks, and the majority of players are training hard. Certainly those that are not ought to be. bootball iu Foxton is likely to be worth looking at this season, and the Executive will not be found at fault in their efforts to keep the game clean. Enthusiasts would do well to help them by keeping the lines clear, and thus lighten the duties of the referee and touch officials alike. Mr Ernie Nash, of Palmerston North, will take charge of Saturday’s game. Kick-off will he at 3 o’clock, immediately after the President (G. A. Simpson, Esq.) has declared the season open.
