Manawatu Herald. THUR DAY, MAY 4, 1905. STEPPING OFF.

The proposal put firth last evening •iy Cr Baker that the Borough ■'ouncil Should take sieps fd prepare schemes for submission to the ratepayers for securing street improvements, a water supply and an effich-n! lighting system, is almost startling in its suddenness and comprehension. It is one, however, that the council will do well to study deeply and with energy. As Cr Baker remarked in moving the resolution, it is very important that every thing possible should be done to improve the condition of this town, which with a “live ” body of mm to urge it along on sound lines must become of some considerable importance. First, however, it is necessary to obtain full information on the various schemes and give the ratepayers anopportunity of examining details of what they may be asked to vote upon. We trust that a better fate may attend those proposals when put forward for the practical approval of ratepayers than that which fell to the lot of alighting scheme promoted some time since. We would just here impress on councillors the necessity of conducting business on the lines laid down in the order paper ; in attempting to discuss two matters at the same time a tendency to laxity is almost certain, and there are occasions when such a display night entail very serious consequences. Fortunately in the present case we have not to chronicle such a contretemps, but would sound a word of warning on the point. Regarding Cr Baker’s proposal we trust that when it has been carefully sifted and suitable portions approved by the ratepayers they will be subsequently prosecuted vigorously and to a practical conclusion. The council has, so to speak, stepped off with the proper foot; now it must keep in step and keep moving. The period of marking time should have ended for Foxton.
