OLD BOYS v. AWAHOU. This game attracted a Fur mind ci t)f onFoFws lo !):<■ r-'a■'•■mr'-m no c; .- ( urday ‘Afternoon last, and judging n.• the interest taken in the Event, Hie Simpson Cup Competition is likely to be very keenly contested. Old Boys were captained by the old stager, Jimmy Desmond, whilst Jimmy Joe steered the Awahoutearm , Both teams had non-qualified ‘members doing battle for them, and the game was played hi the best of spirit; From the Start Old Boys held the advantage, Sind it was soon apparent they would about win— 3. Bisk they ultimately accomplished to the tune of 11 points to oil. The score was obtained by the aid of tries gained by Hooker, Shadbolt, and Lee, one of which G. Dunn converted. For the winners, W. Hooker played the best forward game on the field, whilst Syd. Wright and Desmond were also conspicuous la the vanguard. Savelle, Barker, and the Dunn Bros, did good work in the backs, though George has too great a tendency to kick instead of making more use of his backs. To become a successful half-back, he should overcome that difficulty. For Awahou, C. Robinson was easily the best back, though Percy Robinson and Coley were prominent at times. Jimmy Joe did not display his usual dash, presumably through want of form, but W. Robinson was always on the ball. Another player ior Awabou worthy of mention is “ Micky ” Cunningham, who saved the situation repeatedly. Mr L. Furrie refereed, and took a firm stand regarding rough play and illwords, Perhaps if other referees sat on the player who is over fond of appealing, as Mr Furrie did on Saturday, the game would become much more congenial to onlookers. Messrs Frew and Lyne carried the touch-flags. EXECUTIVE MEETING. A meeting of the Foxton Executive was held at Levett's Hotel on Satuiday night, there being present: Messrs H. Austin, (chairman) R. Slggs, F. Robinson, J. Jillet and E. G. Sutherland (Secretary). The minutes of the previous meeting wore read and confirmed. The time of fixing nominations for the teams competition was fixed for next Friday, when referee entries will also be received. Correspondence was read from Mr Muller, secretary Manawatu Union, re affiliating Foxton Executive. The secretary reported having received favourable replies from Messrs Geo. Coley and Geo. Gray, two vicepresidents of the Executive, and anticipated further replies from honorary officers before next meeting. The matter of goal-posts and complete marking out of the lines came up for discussion, and working committees were formed to carry out the work. . , 1 The secretary was instructed to write to Mr Tatana (secretary Hnia Club) pointing out the benefits to be derived through joining the Manawatu Accident Insurance Fund. The secretary was also instructed to write to the Racecourse Trustees for use of ground. Mr Fred Martin was appointed gatekeeper tor the season. Th« next meeting was fixed for Frid. night at Gray’s Hotel, when tbt fixtures for the season will be 1 drawn. , , , The usual vote of thanks to the chair &ad to Mr Levett lor the use of the room concluded the proceedings. 1
Notes. Th« Old Boys Club intend going into frork solidly, and are engaging the Public Hall once a week for combination purposes. Awahou would do well to follow in their wake. The Awahou Club held a meeting on Saturday night last and discussed the insurance scheme, eventually deciding |o become attached to same. To meet the levy successfully, they made their yearly subscription fee ss. Mr J. Joe was elected field captain, and W. Robinson vice-captain. Football is likely to be well conducted this year, and players are taking an unusual interest in the game, which augurs well for keen competition. Mr E. Nash, one of the Manawatu R#p, selectors, has intimated his willingness to referee in the first competition match for the Simpson Cup, so it behoves local players to get into form It they yvant to have a chance of gaining a Manawatu rep. cap. The rules and by-laws have been considerably revised lately, so players should make it their business to purchase annuals when published. The Manawatu Rugby Union are considering a proposal to hold football sports, in a large way, on June 3rd. Gst into trim, boys.
