Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, APRIL 20, 1905. BOROUGH ELECTIONS.

The revival Of intteteSt displayed in loval niuiii'cifiai rtidUcl’Si if wi iMy j dgt! from the plethora of candidates for office, augurs well for the future. In the case of the mayoral contest, Mr Simpson, the retiring chief magistrate for the town, again offers hiS tei ; vlbfe9| which during the past year have always been ill the way of progress. He is opposed by Mr $. 0$ Gowers who by feason of much good work done in his seat at the council table should have some claim on burgesses. It remains for them to decide whim they favour. For the council there are fourteen candidaies for nine seats, which gives a wide range for selection. Among those offering are some who have already done yoeman servicci and others who are well known as men of sterling worth and good business capacity. A suggestion made in another column that the candidates should all address the electors pub. licly before the deciding day, is a good one, which we would commend to those concerned. It U but fair that before voting ratepayers should know something of the intentions of those whom they are asked to support. It may be well to inform electors that on this occasion a new system of indicating votes will come into operation here. Under the Local Elections Act ot last year it is provided that in the voting paper there shall be a square opposite the name of each candidate, in which the voter is to mark a cross for whom he desires to vote. It is provided, however, that on this occasion a voting paper will not be rendered informal if these directions are not fully carried out, provider! that the intention of the voter is made fully clear to the returning officer. The polling booth will be open for the purpose of recording votes from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Other conditions are similar to those formerly in vogue, and no difficulty should be experienced by voters.
