Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, APRIL 8, 1905. WELLINGTON BYE-ELECTION.
The electors of Wellington City on Thursday showed a strong sense of appreciation of the good deeds of a departed legislator by electing his son as their representative. In placing Mr F. M. B. Fisher in the position rendered vacant by the death of Me George Fisher, they gave an indication of several things—recognition of past services and of present promise of personal power, and also of a distaste for any interference with their political liberties. The defeat of Mr Ixard by such a large majority makes it apparent that the people of Wellington do not desire to have their freedom of selection influenced by the introduction of Government patronage, although, on the other hand* theil 1 sense of justice 1 was made apparent in the summary rejection of Mr John Hutcheson. Whilst this is to be regretted in some respects, as by reason ot his former parliamentary experience he should have made a useful member; still when any man invokes the aid of vulgarly bitter abuse it shows that he has either a low estimate of the intelligence of his hearers or that he has lost that control of hid own speech and actions so necessary in the successful public man. Mr Hutcheson’s opponents showed this moderation, and reaped benefits accordingly. The new junior member for Wellington City has defined himself as an Independent Liberal, and while he will not vote against the present Administration on a no-confidence motion he reserves the right of criticism and freedom of action in all other matters.
