DISASTERS IN AMERICA. New York, March 21. Owing to old boilers being used in Grover’s shoe factory at Brockton, Massachusetts, while the new ones ware being repaired, an explosion occurred, setting fire to the factory. The flames travelled rapidly to a dwelling house 100 feet beyond. The charred and unrecognisable bodies ol 140 persons have been recovered. An explosion in Redash Colliery, Thurmond, West Virginia, killed ten miners. A second explosion killed fourteen would-be rescuers. Six of those who went into the mine on returning to the surface complained of the recklessness of the fourteen in carrying naked lights. VENEZUELA. New York, March 21. President Castro has been warned against cancelling the French Cable Company’s concession in Venezuela. Meanwhile two warships have been ordered to Venezuela, to act under the instructions of the French Minister. BRITISH POLITICS. London. March 21.
Mr John Morley, addressing the League of Young Liberals in London, declared that there were not two of the Viceroys and Chief Under-Secretaries for Ireland during recent years who were not convinced of the necessity for reform in the government of Ireland. He would not have duality of government if he could help it, but Britain’s duty, having wronged Ireland in the past, was to look into the question with a clear and steady gaze, and try to bring it to a satisfactoiy end. Mr Morley stated that he would have only a moderate confidence in any Liberal Cabinet that did not include direct representatives of labour.. Mr John Redmond, M.P., speaking at Holburn, said : —Mr Gladstone’s Home Rule policy is still ours ; we are asking no more. I have used the words " Independent Parliament ” in the same sense as Mr Gladstone. We ■never asked for repeal of the union, MINOR MATTERS EPITOMISED. The Mullah of Somaliland is pledged to maintain peace and repress slavery in the territory allotted to him in the Italian protectorate. The Boers of Orangia have agreed with the Government to place public education above racial antagonism. Germany pointedly ignores the AngloFrench agreement regarding Morocco, and assures the Sultan that it is determined to maintain the Moroccan integrity. As a result the Gorman Influence is predominant and the discomfiture of the French mission at Fez is becoming marked. The Kaiser’s Intention to visit Tangier is intensely exciting the Arabs, who are attracting attention in France.
New York newspapers relate a curious story regarding Mrs Athole Reader, wife of a New Zealander, who was appointed a fiscal agent at San Domingo, President Roosevelt’s threat to use a big stick frightened President Morales, who cancelled the agreements. Five hundred Turkish soldiers defeated a strong Bulgarian band at Smolika, killing forty-two, including the commander. Three Turks were killed and eight wounded. The French barque Camebiere, bound from New Caledonia to the Clyde, has been wrecked at Dundrum Bay, on the north-east coast of Ireland. Trials made at Cherbourg, the French fortified seaport opposite Portsmouth, demonstrate the unquestionable superiority of submersible vessels over submarines. Tho Commission of Inquiry considers the latter ve superseded. The “ Daily Express ” states that after the South African war the authorities threw thousands of tons of perfectly sound tinned meat into the sea or sold it as manur.e to the manager of the Reunion sugar estates. Natal bought a guantity for manure. The natives bought tins and ate the contents without harm.
