McGuire, who was defeated by Mr Major at the last election, has decided to contest the Hawera seat at the general election. Earl Cawdor has been appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. His consummate business capacity is generally recognised. The “ Daily Chronicle,” amongst other newspapers, is congratulating the Government on his appointment. There died in Melbourne the other day from consumption the eldest daughter of Mr Martyn Hagan, who was professionally known as Miss Marie Woodforde. The deceased young lady was well-known throughout New Zealand, having toured frequently with Mr Martyn Hagan and his wife (Miss Lucy Fraser), with whom sincere sympathy will be felt.
