Foxton Literary and Debating Society
OPENING OF 1905 SESSION. The first meeting for the new session ot the society was held in Mr Moore’s office last night. Despite the inclemency of the weather, there was a fair attendance of members. Mr Barnard was voted to the chair. Although the real subject of the evening’s work was to be impromptu debating, the business kept the meeting occupied f w such a length of time as to necessitate the adjournment of the debate. The report and balance-sheet for last year was first read by the late secretary, Mr Barnard, and adopted by the meeting. Arrangements regarding the magazine were then discussed, the committee recommending that suggestions fora title to the magazine be sent in by members to the secretary. Members were also requested to send in their contributions as early as possible, so as to avoid any delay in the publication of the.magazine. Mr Hutchison then proceeded to read the constitution and rales that had been drawn up bv a sub-com-mittee (Rev. Wilson, Mr Hutchison, and the secretary, Mr L. Jcnks) appointed for the purpose. The constitution and rules provoked some very lively discussion, several members objecting to the chairman characterising one member’s argument as a “ quibble.” At length, however, they were carried with some slight amendments. The election of a president and a vice-president was held over till next meeting. The foliowing were proposed and elected members ot the Society Messrs F. W. Frankland, E. Marshall, J. Johnson, F. Morgan, A. Harper, K. Furrie, R. Hynes, C. Barnard, and Brother Fox. The next meeting will be occupied with a debate on the question—- “ Should capital punishment be abolished ? ”
