Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, MARCH 7, 1905. A COMMENDABLE STEP.
: ithvGKu by the spirit exhibited last evening at the special nv-eting of the Borough Council public interest in municipal aUIUi’S can scarcely be termed more than lake-warm. While this, it may be argued, shows appreciably the trust reposed by the people in their representatives on the council, there remains apparent an apathy thAt 13 extremely regrettable when a matter of such vital importance is under consideration. It is not merely a question of securing a minor convenience i the absence ot an efficient supply of water may at any moment place in jeopardy human life and thousands of pounds worth oi property. It is well indeed that a few men are at least."awakening id - th.responsibilities ol the position, and we trust that the public, though seemingly unwilling to stir out of a well-worn groove to secure protection for themselves, will at least approve of the steps now being taken to test the possibilities of an artesian water supply. And this approval, we also trust, will if the quest for water he successful be further manifested by the formulation and carrying ’ into effect of an up-to-date system of water and sewerage services for the main portion ot the town. For with the acquisition of a good water supply one of the difficulties regarding a sewerage system will have been removed. In the meantime, however, water is the first essential requirement, and when that is proved to be available we shall be able to discuss how it may he turned to the best account. That this may be soon will surely be the earnest wish of all who harm the welfare of Foxton at heart.
