Manawatu Heads.

SUGGESTION TO POPULARISE THE RESORT. At the quarterly meeting of thd Palmerston North Chamber of Com* merce, the “ Standard ” reports, the President said it had occurred to him that Palmerston was greatly m need of a seaside resort. At 'the present time people were compelled to g‘o to Plimmerton, but the cost of transit was very great and cottages were not always obtainable, consequently many families were compelled to stay at home because of the cost and the inability to secure a cottage. We had close at hand, at Foxton, an ideal seaside resort. The cost of getting there would be a mere trifle. He had made inquiries and had ascertained that sections were obtainable on the beach for 20s per annum. He moved that a special meeting be held in a month’s time to discuss the matter and that the members for Palmerston, Feilding and" Manawatu be asked to attend, together with Borough Conn' cillors from Palmerston, Foxton, Feilding, Woodville, Dannevirke>and Pahiatua, also members of County Councils in the adjoining districts, Messrs G. C. Colyiif/ (Himatangi), James D maid (Bahlesse), G. Kendall (Oroua Bridge), Mathieson (Karere), Bird (Longburn), T. Lowes and J. H, Vincent (Ashhurst). From this meet* ing a deputation could be appointed to wait on the Government with a view ot having three miles of railway laid along the Lady’s Mile; these trains then convey excursionists direct to the beach.

The motion was seconded by Mr R* S. Abraham, who said if the scheme could be carried to fruition it would be of very great benefit. He thought an approximate cost of the suggested railway was about £2OOO, the question having been gone into at the time the proposed freezing works at the Foxtoa Heads was being discussed. Captain Dunk said that he had recently been in conversation with the Mayor of Foxton on the question, and he was ot opinion that the Foxton people would enter very enthusiastic* allv into the matter. The resolution was carried.
