The Steele-Payne Bellringers.
The ever popular Steele-Payne family of Bellringers will make their re-appearance at the Public Hall, Foxton, on Monday, January 30th. When we say that for years this talented musical organisation has been noted for the excellence of their entertainments, that they have made a point of fulfilling to the very letter their obligations to the public a point that companies that have visited us might give more attention to, and that they have endeavoured, and succeeded in providing an audience with varied and tuneful music and fun without vulgarity, we only pay the members a compliment that is well deserved. We have referred so often in terms of praise to the excellence of the programme submitted to Foxton audiences that we can only remark that the organisation is as strong, if not stronger, and as talented, if not more talented, than ever. Possessing the reputation that the company has gained by hard work, by assiduous musical studies, by graceful deportment on the stage, and providing tuneful and varied melodies, we need not expatiate at length on the merits of this excellent combination. The company comprise Misses Lizzie and Maude Payne, Mr Ralph Steele, who are too well-known to need further comment, two new members being Miss Lena Fisher, mezzosoprano and pianist, and Mr Tom Elston, baritone, elocutionist and musical sketch artist, and the reappearance of Master Claude Steele, the youthful comedian, of whom our exchanges speak in great praise, and is aptly described as a “ chip of the Old Block.” The dresses worn by the ladies will cause a fluttering of many a female heart. They were made in Auckland, and were the latest Parisian confections. They are said to be masterpieces of the costumiers’ art, and were the theme of general admiration wherever the company has appeared.
