Reeves, Agent-General of New Zealand, against the regulation imposed by the Now Zealand Government requiring the diachoun of the contents of patent medicines and contended that such a, regulation was ultra vires. Tire deputation asked for its withdrawal, ns a compliance with it was impossible. RYE-ELECTION. ’The Mile End Election resulted : H. Lawson (Conservative), 2118 ; Strans (Liberal). 2060. Mr Lawson’s advocacy of aliens restriction was the chief cause of his victory. ARBITR ATION TREATY. The Anglo - Austro - Hungarian treaty of arbitration has been signed in London, TRIBAL FRICTION. JAPANESE TRADE. The Japanese exports for 1901 increased by 10 per cent, and the imports 17 per cent. SOUTH AFRICA. CAPETOWN, Jan. 14. The Transvaal Native Affairs Committee report that there is no hope of a political federation of South Africa while the native franchise remains in the present chaotic condition and suggest that the Cape natives should not be allowed to vote at Federal Parliament elections, and only allowed six representatives in the State Parliament. STRIKERS. SYDNEY, Jan. 16. Summonses have been issued against the wheelers who refused to .work at the lower rate of wages as fixed by the Arbitration Court.
