Fires in Australia.
SYDNEY, Jan. 12.
Mr Carruthers, the Premier, con siders his cable to Mr Seddon has been misunderstood and a wrong complexion placed on it. The view he took was that he declined to let his State appear as a beggar for charity from outside bodies. If out side people wished to send contributions as a matter of good fueling and sympathy it was quite open for them to do so, but he was not going to accept an invitation from them to become a beggar. He certainly did not say, at any time, that relief was not wanted, but expressed the hope that this State was well able to look after cases of destitution caused by a sudden calamity. The Government will grant £1 for £1 up to £SOOO on contributions to the Bush Fire Relief Fund.
An expert has been appointed to inquire into the cause of the fire, and he is to report on the best means of preventing further similar fires.
AUCKLAND. Jan. 12
The following telegram has been received by the “ Star ” from Syd ney : —“ The Committee of the Bush Fire Relief Lord Mayor’s fund has resolved that, in view of the Premier’s statement and the liberal local contributions, no outside assistance is required.—Signed, H. C. Brierley, Hon. Sec.”
