The Kitson Light.
The desirability of lighting the town with the above light has engaged the attention of the Foxton Borough Council for the past threemonths. At last Monday’s meeting the matter was again before them, but, as usual, nothing was decided upon. Our leading article deals with the matter. ' Therefore, we will not further waste the time of our readers with the twaddling discussion which took place, other than reprinting a letter received by the Mayor (Mr Gr A. Simpson) from the Wellington director of the Kitson Coy,: —“ Dear Sir, —We enclose you letter for the information 6f your Councillors and for your own private ear, we would like to add that after making the most exhaustive enquiries, we find that the causes of the dissatisfaction with these lamps was undoubtedly due—first, to the additional labour required of the employees in looking after them; second, to the amount of coal dust in the stoke-hold; third, to the fact that the persons employed by the Kitson Company to maintain the lamps did no tsee that they were kept clean, did not properly arrange them so that they could be worked independently of each other, and to the fact that the necessary repairs were not promptly executed, nor were they done in a workmanlike manner. It is, of course, necessary that these lamps like any others require careful attention, preferably by a man with some mechanical knowledge. The fact still remains that ten of these lamps are being used at the Car sheds at the present time, and the whole time required in repairing, cleaning, and lighting is only two hours per day. We hope the information sent herewith will be useful to you in bringing matters to a proper determination.—Faithfully Yours, Arthur J. Grabham.” We may explain that at a previous meeting of the Council, some Of the Councillors spoke detrimental of the Kitson light, on account of it being discontinued at the Wellington Electric Power House. The Mayor made enquiries as to this fact, and the letter above is a reply relating thereto.
