Grand Catholic Bazaar.
Certainly the blaze of colour which met the eye on entrance to the Public Hall last night augured well for the success of the bazaar, which has been the main topic of conversation for the past month. Prior to the official opening the Foxton Borough Band played various selections outside the Hall. In a short appropriate speech Mr G. A. Simpson (Mayor) declared the Fair open, and wished it all the success it deserved. Soon after, an army of cheery faced prettily attired ladies were eagerly and energetically all over the hall endeavouring to raffle a pin-cushion, picture, or other such article necessary to make housefurnishing complete. Some of the costumes worn by the ladies were much admired, and paid many high compliments to the dressmakers entrusted with their manufacture. As secretary, Mr J. T, Levett was both courteous and hard-working, and much of the success of the opening night was due to his indefatigable efforts. The various stalls were controlled by the following: - Britannia Stall (Pine Art Needle Work and Painting).—Meadames Quin and Levett. The assistants were Misses E. and M. Hurley (Manakau), M. Alzdorf, Nellie King, Mary King, and Nellie, Ivy, May, Lizzie and Dav. Laing. It is worthy of note that most of the goods displayed in this stall was the work of Mrs Quinn and her pupils. Zealandia Stall (Art Work and Fancy Goods). - Mrs Arthur Reeve, Assistants Mesdames Andreasen and F. Dunn, Misses E. and L. Cook, F. Dudson and others. Shamrock Stall (Fancy Goods). - Mrs Smith. Master Becker, of Manakau, earned applause for a sailor’s hornpipe and Irish Jig, whilst Messrs McKinney and Olsen successfully contributed a cornet duet. The Maypole Dance was prettily executed by 24 young girls, and a Highland Fling was admirably danced by the following ladies: Misses I. Laing, A. Collins, M. Alzdorf, C. Overend, King, M. Barnard, F. Levett, A. Levett, The prize - winners last night were Mesdames J. King, Geo. Gray, Messrs J. King, J. Joe, A. Ross, J. B. Marshall, and Geo. Simpson.
