Kissing on the Beach.
Nmv York, Sept. 11. Atlantic City, New Jersey, is a popular seaside resort, which is run on strictly novel lines. The thousands of bathers who frequent the beach are hemmed in by all sorts of restrictions and “dents,” The costumes of bathers are prescribed, and strong language is punishable by fines. A Philadelphia man was arrested and fined 10s and costs last week because a constable swore that he heard him say ‘damn,’ although the word was used under great provocation. A life-saving boatman had inadvertently hooked him in the leg with a boat hook. The “ trippers ” from Philadelphia and Baltimore have this summer openly violated the decency of the resort by indulging in public kissing on the Beach. A number of couples were arrested on Monday for this flagrant violation of the law and were fined £2 each. One of the men proved that he had kissed his own wife, whereupon the mayor, who judged the case, said, with unconscious humour, that he proposed to put an end to such a scandal, and would fine him all the more. Married men, he said, ought to set a better example, and not kiss their wives in public. ' The popular seaside resort of Atlantic City has been shunned by couples on their honeymoons since the mayor issued his edict against love-making One recently married and two engaged couples have been arrested and fined three guineas each, it will be remembered, for behaving too affectionately on the beach during bathing hours. One male offender, who was deascribed by a policeman as having had his arm round a girl’s waist, “ sort of loving,” was severely reprimanded by the magistrate. A young married man, who protested that he simply kissed his wife, was subjected to sarcastic comment and advised to do bis kissing more privately. The Mayor declares that he will conduct the crusade vigorously, and says, “ Public kissing is scandalous and shocks visitors; it must be stopped. Couples will not be allowed to walk about with their arms round one another’s waists and heads on each other’s shoulders. All such offenders will be severely punished.” To-day policemen patrolled the beach keeping a sharp look-out for «* spooners ” and warning couples who appeared likely to break the law. Young women visitors are very indignant with the mayor, and declare that they will not obey his edict. Many of them carry large parasols which serve as effective screena’for themselves and their escorts while love-making is in progress.
in the Bide came back, and in the week before Ascot she sent for a doctor He examined her carefully. Then he looked grave, " Shall I tell you what is wrong? ” he asked.
“I know,” said Lady Tweedmouth, “ it is cancer, and I have only a short time to live. The doctor nodded a sorrowful assent.
“ Well,” said the famous Liberal hostess, “ what must be must be. But do not say anything about it just now. I must go to Ascot. I do not want to disappoint ray friends. And I don’t want to stop ray son going to Paris to play polo. Wait until the end of next week.” Bo she went to Ascot, made as great an impression as ever, played bridge until one o’clock each morning, and in everything seemed her usual self. Then at the end of next week she went home find made her preparations for death. As soon as she had done all there was to do in London, she packed up and went to her beautiful home in Invernessshire* That was where she had made up her mind to die.
