Foxton Street Lighting.

ON THE WAY TO PROGRESS. There was considerable discussion at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council as to whether the Main-street of FoXtod should bs better illuminated than it is at present. Mostly all the members joined in conversation. Correspondence was received from the Ritson Light Coy. on the matter detailing particulars. The Mayor explained that it was mainly owing to a Chat he had with the Kitson manager whilst in Wellington that the exhibition lamp was on view in Foxton redentlyi The Mayor remarked that it was about time the town showed some progress, and probably the Council may see fit to purchase three or four of these lamps for the purpose of illuminating the Main street. He had gleaned that in the Power House in Wellington, the elec trie light people were using the Kitson light in preference to electricity. It was claimed fay the Company that the oil consumed panned out at something under a penny an hour per lamp. Cr Baker thought money could be put to better use repairing back streets than buying lamps. Cr Speirs thought it the Council had an idea of going la for gas later on, the purchase of lamps would be money wasted. However, the Mayor and other Councillors spoke of the advantages of good lighting, and finally the following motion was put and carried, — Proposed by Cr Symons, seconded by Cr Coley, That this Council purchase four Kitson lamps for the town if satisfactory terms could be arranged, the lamps to be the same as the one that was on view in September.
