THE WAR.
KUROPATKIN RETIRING PROM MUKDEN. ADMIRAL ALEXIEFF RECALLED. General Kuropatkin, with his main force, has withdrawn northwards of Mukden. Strong bodies defend both flanks. Many guns are in position, being protected by trenches and entanglements, especially on the western road to Mukden. There is a strong rearguard south of the town defending the southern approaches, which are mined. The Paris newspaper Le Matins’ St, Petersburg correspondent reports that' the Czar has summoned Admiral Alexietf to hear a statement of the situation. This is interpreted to mean that he is to return. There are persistent reports that the Grand Duke Nicholas Nicholaivitch is to be appointed Generalissimo. The Japanese, at Niuchwang, executed fifteen river pirates.
