Whilst one of Mr Jupp’s punts was moored alongside the s.s. Himitangi on Thursday night she sank with rontons of coal aboard for one of the flaxmills. On Thursday night she was apparently floating safely, but on Friday morning it was found she had settled at the bottom of the river. The s.s. Defender' (Capt. Jamieson) paid her first visit to Foxton yesterday afternoon, laden with coal tor the Railway Department trom Greymouth. She is a vessel of 117 tons, and is owned by Wild and Co., ot Hokitika. Capt. Jamieson expects to leave by this afternoon’s tide on the return to Greymouth. Some mild excitement was felt in town on Thursday afternoon when the little schooner “ Emma Sims ” berthed alongside the wharf, a number oi people mistaking her for the scow “ Surprise,” in connection with which an enquiry was recently held. The "Emma Sims” is the first sailing vessel to arrive in port for about nine months.
In the window of Mr E. E. Smith, tailor, of Main Street, is on exhibition a beautiful cut-glass silver-plated epergne, presented by Mr and Mrs T, Haywood to the winner of the Local Bicycle Race at the Foxton Sports on November gth. The police Court of St. Heller, the principal town of Jersey, is remarkable in several respects. First, the proceedings are always opened with prayer; second, it frequently happens_ that after prayers there is no more business, and everyone goes home. There is so little crime committed in the island that the police force (30 strong) is kept up only for visitors. The lambing in the Wairarapa (says the Leader) has been the best experienced for years. On rtiany farms running Docks of 3000 to 4000, the percentage has been considerably over a hundred, while in smaller flocks it has been quite usual to see double births. Although the weather has been very rough there has been small mortality. The discovery has been made at Leece, in Italy, during the medical examination of Guiseppe de Maggio, aged 23. that the man possesses two ribs more than the usual number, and two hearts. The hearts are on either side of the chest cavity, that on the right being healthy, and the other atrophied. De Maggio has been offered A 16cm for his body after death by an American Museum, one half to be paid at once and the rest when he is 46. Lost in a Mexico jungle while on a Eleasure trip, a month or two ago, Mr ,ewis Wettling, a wealthy banker, of Lincoln, Nebraska, Could not establish his identity, on returning to civilisation, and had to live penniless among tramps in the city of Vera Cruz for a fortnight. At last some friends met him barefooted, bearded, ragged, and tanned like a negro. They gauranteed that he was no impostor, says the San Francisco Call, and he drew on bis bankers for a sum sufficient to take him home. Owing to the excessive heat and partially to the new practice now popular of arranging seaside outings on a system of payments by instalment, never in the history of France has there been such an exodus to the country as in the past few days (writes a Paris Correspondent). It Is estimated that nearly five hundred thousand, or about one-fifth of the population, are out ot town. One consequence of the heat has been to make Versailles uninhabitable, for owing to the partial drying up of the park lakes, their surfaces are covered with tons of rotting fish. A petrol torpedo-boat is under consideration, dr in course of construction at one of the Thames firms famous fof the manufacture of vessels of the kind. By the use of petrol much more space will be available for the crew than is the case in steam-driven torpedo-boats; and this is recognised by the naval authorities as an important advantage. In a talk with a representative of the Daily Chronicle had with a torpedoboat designer as to this petrol engine of war, the expert remarked, " Cod help those on board when a petrol torpedo boat is hit by a shell!”
Evidently the "dignity of the Court" is an unknown quantity in Mangaweka. In the Magistrates’ Court a few days ago, before two local Justices, a parent was fined as for failing to send his child to school. On hearing the amount of the fine, defendant called out, “You’ll whistle for it, tool” Then after getting as far as the door, "I'd like to jump on his (presumably the Justice’s) chest.” Apparently this was on!y_ one of Mangaweka’s usual Court incidents, as the next case proceeded immediately. Those about to insure would do well to remember that the Australian Mutual Provident Society holds the world’s record for largest bonuses. Every person who takes out a policy j with this Society by 31st December next will share in the profits divided on that date. The amount divided by policy holders last year was £582,168. Bonuses are issued yearly. Edward W. Lowe is the Resident Secretary, the branch office being situated on Customhouse Quay, Wellington. George Mickelson was arrested at Carterton on Monday last, on suspicion ot being of unsound mind, and after an examination bv local medicos, has been sent to the Porirua Asvlum. He was under the impression that " King Dick” had appointed him an inspector in connection with the dairy industry and cow-byres, and gave the settlers of Belvedere a very lively time for not “clearish up theirsh filther yardsh." At one farmhouse he scared the occupants by insisting on the boss coming out at 3 a.m. on Sunday to inspect the yards or he would debar him from sending milk to the factory. A terrible epidemic was afflicting the babies of New York when the last mail left. In the tenement district infants were dying by hundreds. For the week ending Jiily 24th there were 279 more deaths from intestinal diseases than in the corresponding week of the previous year. The doctors are, apparently, powerless. The American mothers are instructed carefully by. local associations how to feed, dress, and care for their children, and, moreover, the milk inspection in America is the strictest in the world. The exceptional severity of the winter, and the consequent lowering of the vitality of the children, is partly responsible for he epidemic. During the hearing of an applies tion at the Magistrate’s Court, Christchurch, for a separation order—the working man’s divorce, as it is termed—the wife accused the husband of having twice struck her, and went on to allege that one night, when he went to bed, he complained that she had all the clothes. Accordingly, said the lady, he snatched the clothes from her, and unceremoniously kicked her out of bed. The husband denied the soft impeachment, and accused his spouse of spoiling his breakfast, just to annoy him. "She would cook the bacon until it’s burnt hard and black," he declared in a tone eloquent with indignation and self-compassion. The order was made, and the discontented couple given the chance to paddle their own canoes in future.
The Manawatu Rowing Club holds its annual general meeting on Friday, 14th October, at 7.30 p.m., in the Racing Club’s room. A full attendance of members is requested, as the report and balance-sheet for the past year will be submitted, and the election of officers for the ensuing season will also take place. “ Character ” and “ reputation ” are not synonymous terms, but the distinction is usually gently ignored by eloquent counsel when pleading for mercy to the prisoner about to be sentenced, remarks “ Christchurch Truth,” In the Supreme Court Mr Cassidy was expatiating on the good character of a man who was guilty of theft, when His Honor interposed quizzically, " How can you say a man who robs a drunken person is of good character ?” '• Well perhaps, ! should have said j»obd reputation,” allowed the solicitor. " Yes, that’s better,” assented the judge. The African Review says that in the Transvaal and the Orange River Colony, if the present rate of intermarriage between Britons and Boers is kept up, within twenty years the two races will be so welded together as to be indistinguishable. The only bitterness now existing is between two sections of the Dutch, the Bitterenders and the Uplanders.
It is reported, says the Christchurch Press, that the deer which were liberated at the back of Albury (South Canterbury) have so increased that they are now becoming a nuisance to farmers in that locality. A herd of no was Seen a few days ago within six miles of the Albury township, and they have already done some damage to turnip and other crops. The . cricket season of an English town club started with a grand two days’ match. : Great preparations were made, and the services of the local publican, who boasted ot being an ex-groundsman from Lord’s, were: enlisted as umpire. Unfortunately; owing to the wet wicket, the match seemed likely to finish on the first day, as by lunch time each of the teams had concluded a single innings. On resumption, one ot the bowlers made several appeals for “ leg before,” but the decision was always given in the batsman’s favor 1 . ” Mow’s that, then ?” he asked triumphantly, as he, at last, scattered the stumps. “No ball,” roared the umpire in the same breath, and it ain’t no use for you to keep on bothering, young fellow. This here match has got to last the two days out. That’s my refreshment tent oyer yonder.”
