Flax Grading.
The member (or Ofcaki questioned the Minister for Agriculture on Wednesday whether he is aware that I tiers are constantly reaching the colony from American and English pnrchasers of our hemp complaining of the imperfect Government grading in various places in the colony, and that for this reason the oversea markets for our hemp are being nlaced in jeopardy; and whether the Government will reconsider their decision to pay graders practically labourers’ wages, and by offering adequate pay secure the services of men who are coraetent to perform the important work entrusted to them ? Mr Duncan stated, in reply: The department has lately been made aware that some complaints of a vague nature have reached the colony, but no definite information has been supplied that would enable the department to locate the fault. One firm especially has address°d a circular letter of such a na‘ure to a considerable number of shippers. They have been requested to supply brands, grader’s name, etc., so that the matter may be inquired into. As to the question of salaries paid to the graders, this is being looked into.—N.Z. Times.
